Bell Canada Hit With Class Action Lawsuit for Throttling & Deep Packet Inspection
L’Union des consommateurs, an Quebec group along with the Bell Canada customer Myrna Raphael, filed a class action lawsuit against the Bell Canada over the company’s internet access policy. The company has allegedly broken the three year ADSL contract with Raphael in 2006.
Bell is also accused of violating the user’s privacy by using a technology called deep packet inspection (DPI) as part of the throttling process. Although DPI may be used for beneficial purposes, such as the control of spam, viruses and hacking, it has also been implicated in more sinister uses such as censorship, net neutrality violations, and government spying.
Both the Quebec group and Raphael ask for 80% of the customers monthly subscription fees, along with $ 600 for advertising policy and $ 1,500 for violating privacy policy.
