Illegal rallies likely to face class action lawsuit
The victims of the illegal rallies may have a reason for relief. The Presidential Council on National Competitiveness and the ruling Grand National Party have agreed to start a class action lawsuit against illegal rallies to protect the interest of the victims. If everything goes right, the victims can sue for compensation in near future.
The council is waiting for the public opinion for this. The council is likely to hold a public hearing on the issue. It seeks some expert opinion on the legality of the system and get a bill passed by the National Assembly during its regular session.
Sources from the Presidential office quoted,
“The majority opinion in judicial circles is that it is possible to file a class action lawsuit against civic organizations, not necessarily the state or enterprises. We expect that it will contribute to improving the protest culture, considering that such a system will put substantial pressure on civic organizations that have so far led illegal, violent protests.”
