Last year’s listeria outbreak related to Maple Leaf meat products killed 20 people and affected almost 5000 general public. The lawsuits were then filed against the Toronto-based business house.
This meat and other food products producer has reached a $27 million settlement. They will pay up to $125,000 to those who have suffered serious and long-lasting injuries and $120,000 to the estates of those who have been killed. The industry is heading towards court for final approval.

The president of Bruneau Group, Laura Bruneau, said she expects about 10,000 claims to be filed.
Maple Leaf is Canada’s largest food processor, with 23,000 employees around the world, and well-known products ranging from Burns and Maple Leaf cold cuts to Dempster’s bread and Olivieri pasta. Due to outbreak and recall the company have to face a burden between $25 million and $30 million, and an extra $15 million as sales losses.
