Ontario introduces cellphone law for the first time in Canada

In an attempt to enforce the cell phone law in Canada, the Ontario administration has decided to ban drivers from using hand-held cellphones, from today.

It can be remembered that it was the same Ontario to make the use of seat-belts mandatory fro the first time in Canada in 1976. And toady after 33 years later, police are still conducting seat-belt blitzes and issuing tickets to those that fail to comply.

Based on the public response to the seat-belt law, driver compliance with the cellphone restriction may be equally long and perhaps even more challenging from a law enforcement perspective.

While cellphones may be the most obvious of the distractions, it is just one of the many non-driving functions that most people do while behind the wheel.

Directing a law specifically at hand-held cellphones will do little except satisfy some of the critics.
There are no credible statistics, from those jurisdictions that already have a cellphone ban in place, that a new law will reduce accidents.

  1. Larry Weng Says:

It is incorrect to say it is the first time in Canada because three other provinces already have such law in place. They are Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Quebec.
