Ontario Superior Court Ruled Against Motion to Dismiss Class Action Lawsuit Against Ridley Inc.
Ontario Superior Court denied to dismiss a mad-cow-related class-action lawsuit against Animal feed producer Ridley Inc. which is a major livestock nutrition company based in Winnipeg and Mankato filed by a dairy farmer.
The class action lawsuits were filed in four provinces by cattle farmers who seek compensation for losses allegedly incurred as a result of international bans which came after a cow in Alberta was diagnosed with mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, in 2003.
Researchers believe that cattle feed contaminated with parts from infected animals can transmit the disease.
However the allegations have not been proven in court.
“We are disappointed with today’s ruling on our preliminary motion,” CEO Steve VanRoekel said in a statement late Thursday.
“But we remain confident in our defence of the case on the merits. We will continue to vigorously defend the lawsuits at each and every stage of the litigation as it progresses.”
