7 indicted in slayings of Florida couple
PENSACOLA, Fla. — A Florida grand jury has indicted seven men on two counts each of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of a Panhandle couple known for adopting 13 children with special needs.
Byrd and Melanie Billings were killed July 9 in at their sprawling home west of Pensacola. Surveillance cameras captured men dressed as ninjas and wearing black masks entering the home, stealing a safe and leaving in less than four minutes.
Tuesday’s indictments give State Attorney Bill Eddins the option of seeking the death penalty against the men. The grand jury also charged the seven with one count each of home-invasion robbery.
An eighth person has been charged with being an accessory after the fact.
