Valverde files complaint against Italian committee
MADRID — Alejandro Valverde has filed a complaint in court in Spain against the Italian Olympic Committee’s attempt to ban the Spanish cyclist for doping.
The Italian committee confronted Valverde in February with DNA evidence and documents that allegedly showed he was involved in the Operation Puerto blood doping case.
Valverde is to appear before prosecutors in Rome next week.
Valverde says in a statement Wednesday that Italian anti-doping prosecutor Ettore Torri is refusing to obey a Spanish judge who says evidence obtained in Spain cannot be used against him in Italy.
Valverde says the case should be heard by the Spanish cycling federation.
