Faith-healing father guilty of lesser charge in Oregon child death; mother acquitted

Father guilty of lesser charge in Ore. child death

OREGON CITY, Ore. — A jury has convicted an Oregon man who believes in faith healing of a lesser charge in the death of his young daughter, and acquitted his wife.

Carl and Raylene Worthington relied on prayer instead of seeking medical care for their 15-month-old daughter, Ava, who died in March 2008 of pneumonia and a blood infection.

Both had been charged with manslaughter and criminal mistreatment.

A jury in Oregon City found the father guilty Thursday of criminal mistreatment, a misdemeanor carrying a maximum sentence of a year in jail. The mother was acquitted of both charges.

The Worthingtons are members of a small church that shuns conventional medicine in favor of faith healing.
