Former Fla. House Speaker will seek US Senate seat
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida’s former Republican House Speaker Marco Rubio will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mel Martinez.
Rubio announced his plans in a video obtained by The Associated Press. The video will be released on his campaign’s web site Tuesday.
Republican Mel Martinez said in December he would not seek a second Senate term in 2010.
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, another Republican, is also considering a run and will likely announce his political plans next week.
Democrats who are seeking the seat include U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek and state Sen. Dan Gelber, who are both from Miami-Dade County.
Rubio is a Miami-area lawyer who served as speaker of the state House for two years before leaving office last year.
