Senator says Sotomayor hearings will come on Judiciary Committee’s schedule, not White House’s

Leahy: Sotomayor hearings will be on his schedule

WASHINGTON — The top Democrat overseeing President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee says he will set his own schedule for Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation hearings.

Sen. Pat Leahy of Vermont said Sunday that he will meet his own schedule, not necessarily the White House’s timeline, to confirm her before an August recess.

The White House says Obama wants Sotomayor to be confirmed before the August recess. Officials want Sotomayor to be in place when the court’s next term begins in October.

The chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Leahy says Sotomayor should be in place before the term starts, but he isn’t committing to Obama’s plan to have her confirmed before the recess.

Leahy spoke to NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
