Specter, Wecht’s lawyers criticize US attorney
PITTSBURGH — Defense lawyers and a U.S. senator have criticized comments made by Pittsburgh’s U.S. attorney last month as her office dismissed fraud and theft charges against a noted pathologist.
Lawyers for former Allegheny County medical examiner Cyril Wecht are calling on U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to formally rebuke U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan. They say she expressed the view that Wecht was guilty of the charges despite the dismissal, and that was “completely improper.”
Buchanan, in announcing the dismissal of the case last month, defended the decision to bring charges against Wecht, saying she still believed a crime had been committed.
U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter called the comments “not appropriate.”
