Sprint Nextel to sell part of Midwest network following iPCS court ruling

Sprint Nextel to sell parts of network

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Sprint Nextel Corp. says it plans to sell a chunk of its cellular network in the Midwest to comply with an Illinois court decision.

The Overland Park-based company says it will turn over ownership and operation of its Nextel-branded network in parts of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska. The sale will have minimal affect on its financial results, Sprint says.

A Cook County Circuit Court judge in February gave Sprint until Jan. 25, 2010, “to cease owning, operating and managing” the Nextel network in territory served by Sprint affiliate iPCS Inc.

The judge determined that Sprint’s 2005 acquisition of Nextel violated an exclusivity arrangement it had with the Schaumburg, Ill.-based affiliate.
