The Jasper County Public Administrator Rita Hunter, faces a class action lawsuit. The class action accuses that Hunter was careless in obtaining guardianship and conservator-ship, and that she charged the woman about $4,500 for her services. The class action also says that Hunter has increased about 400 percent over those charged by her predecessor. Hunter is also accused of double-billing some clients, by charging fees for some of her work or a deputy clerk’s work when she is paid a salary by the county to provide those services.
U.S. District judge has dismissed all the criminal charges against securities law firm Milberg Weiss hours after the last defendant in the long-running criminal case, a Palm Springs real estate attorney, pleaded guilty to a tax-related felony. U.S. District Judge John Walter has also vacated the law firm’s Aug. 12 trial date on Monday this week. In a statement the assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Robinson said the government didn’t seek a guilty plea from the law firm because all the indicted partners had pleaded guilty. None of the participants in the scheme still worked at Milberg Weiss, and a guilty plea would have “killed” the firm.
The lawsuit against the Hoosier Lottery has gained the class action status in the Marion Superior Court last week. This $20 million lawsuit was filed in January 2007. The lawsuit has charged the Hoosier Lottery of overstating the number of available prizes. Though the issue with the Cash Blast game was a one-time problem and the game has since been discontinued, the lottery continues to be criticized about issues with scratch-off games. A lawsuit has been filed against the Panzerotto Pizza and Wing Machine in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The lawsuit charges the companies of overcharging its franchisees for advertising, order processing and supplies.

German institutional investor Metzler Investment GMBH has filed a $500-million class action lawsuit against the T-shirt maker Gildan Activewear Inc at the Ontario Superior Court late last week. However, the news was announced on Monday. The class action claims Gildan issued materially false and misleading statements concerning its financial performance and prospects. Metzler Investment, the leading plaintiff in the case has alleged to have lost around $900,000 after information about the problems at the plant was released. Gildan CEO Glenn Chamandy and a holding company in his name made $95.2 million US selling shares between Aug. 9 and Dec. 5, 2007.
